Podcast: “Writing Newspapers Was an Unusual Thing for Sailors to Do” – Hester Blum on Transoceanic Cultures
Remember our WeberWorldCafé “Transoceanic Cultures – The Sea in Past and Present”? Last October, we met with several experts on the seas and oceans, the transregionality of maritime cultures, and the way oceans connect continents and people with each other. The day before the event, Johanna Beamish had the chance to talk to Hester Blum who acted as table host at the WWC. Blum, an Associate Professor of English at Penn State, talked about her research regarding sailors writing their own newspapers, forgotten artifacts of arctic expeditions, and the bad luck of ships running on ground.
